Helsinki Chemicals Forum Addresses
Challenges and Presents Solutions for REACH Compliance, Part One
by
Helen Gillespie, Editor, LIMS/Letter
Most
people never forget their very first car. I’ve never forgotten
the sports car I learned to use a stick shift in. Nor have I forgotten
using the choke to get it to start. Nor have I forgotten bending over
the engine or sliding under the car to make quick fixes on the side of
the road to get it going again. Nor have I forgotten times when the floor
mat got stuck under the accelerator; using my heel to quickly pull the
floor mat back was just par for the course. Driving used to be much more
of an adventure than it is now and safety wasn’t an expectation.
Times have changed. Safety is now expected, not just in the cars we drive
but in the food we eat, the toys we buy, and the products we purchase—from
non-toxic paint to flammable-resistant curtain fabric. Hence regulatory oversight
has become more complicated, and in many cases contradictory, as safety issues
are identified and safety expectations continue to rise.
This is the first of a two-part article that explores the REACH chemical safety
regulation that was recently highlighted at the HCF 2010 conference.

LIMS-on-Demand
Changes the SaaS LIMS Paradigm
The introduction of Thermo Scientific LIMS-on-Demand
at Pittcon 2010 has marked the transition from Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)
solutions offered by just a few smaller vendors into the big time with
the entrance of a major LIMS provider now delivering full LIMS functionality
through the on-demand model. LIMS/Letter editor Helen Gillespie
interviewed Kim Shah, Thermo Fisher’s Director of Informatics Marketing
and Business Development, to examine some of the challenges and issues
that went behind launching the LIMS-on-Demand solution.

Chemicals
Forum to Inform about Looming European Deadlines
by Leslie Burt, Laboratory Product News
Some
LIMS solutions have a chemical inventory management component to support
lab operations, or else the lab implements a standalone solution such
as ChemSW’s CISPro solution when more sophisticated needs exist.
The ability to manage and report inventory -- both incoming and outgoing
-- used for lab as well as production QA/QC processes is growing in importance.
An emerging European standard will affect those processes at organizations
that import to Europe. Guest editor Leslie Burt outlines the challenge

2009: The Year in
Review
A Look Back at 2009 Shows Dynamic, Far-reaching Changes in LIMS Industry
There
is a group of friends who end each year by writing down all the negative
things that happened
on scraps of paper and tossing those scraps into the fire, enabling them
to start the new year fresh and unencumbered.
Looking back at 2009, there are certainly things to throw into the fire:
an evil economy, loss of jobs, loss of sales. Fortunately the LIMS industry
was not hit as hard as other sectors. Of course there was streamlining–from
internal reorganizations to mergers and acquisitions–but companies
continued to install new LIMS, new LIMS were introduced, and a plethora
of enhancements and add-ons for existing LIMS were offered. Many Informatics
vendors reported strong sales and growth during the year.

Abbott Acquisition of STARLIMS Expected
to Grow Informatics Capabilities in the Diagnostics Marketplace
The
recent news that Abbott, a global health care company, will acquire STARLIMS
Technologies Ltd., a market leader in LIMS, for $123 million should stimulate
growth in diagnostics informatics capabilities. Abbott believes that the
acquisition will strengthen their competitive position in the global diagnostics
market. STARLIMS, perhaps more than any other LIMS vendor, has extensive
expertise in not only LIMS but also the LIS marketplace that targets clinical
and hospital data management requirements. This article explores the acquisition
through an interview with Jeff Ferguson, STARLIMS Chief Operating Officer.
DECEMBER 2009
Data Management, Social Networking, and
Real-Time Knowledge Empowerment
Three
recent conferences highlight the vast differences in not only how data
is being managed but also how businesses are spending vast amounts of
time, energy and money to gather, process, report and gain a return on
their data investment. The three conferences have entirely different focuses
and approaches, but all seek the same goal of making better sense from
the data. This article examines the different ways that different types
of organizations address the challenge ...

Global Regulatory Environment
Intensifies
N ew
regulations are being introduced at every turn. Indeed, the FDA alone
issues hundreds of revisions to existing regulations as well as new ones
every year. This past year was no exception, with the issuance of numerous
updates as well as the release of a new Process Validation Guidance and
a new Risk Communication Plan to name just two. In addition, the FDA is
tightening their enforcement actions both at home and abroad during foreign
GMP inspections.

The Truth Behind the Hype
Behind Software-as-a-Service (SAAS) LIMS, Part Two
The
second of a two-part article on Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) LIMS solutions
that discusses the benefits of this new on-demand solution versus the
traditional on-premise appications that have been offered since LIMS were
first offered in the marketplace ...

The Truth Behind the Hype
Behind Software-as-a-Service (SAAS) LIMS, Part One
There
is significant interest in on-demand Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions
due to increasing dissatisfaction with the costs, complexities, and length
of time that it takes to realize value from on-premise application investments.
As a result, many LIMS vendors are now offering SaaS versions of their
software. These SaaS LIMS replace large upfront fees and costs with periodic
payments at a fraction of the price, thus offering cost-effective alternatives
to traditional packaged applications. This is the first of a two part
article that explores the issues involved with understanding and evaluating
this new generation of LIMS ...

Integrating Web-based Regulatory
and Compliance Management Systems with LIMS at the Florida Department
of Agriculture to Unify Disparate Laboratory Systems
by James Maggio and Mike Lehtola, PerkinElmer
Corporation, Weldon Collier, Florida Dept of Agriculture and Consumer
Services
Every
laboratory develops a unique approach to their work processes over time
that periodically needs to be examined and streamlined in order to be
as efficient as possible. The challenges inherent in updating a legacy
system to an integrated enterprise solution are compounded when more than
one lab is involved. Find out how the Florida Department of Agriculture
is solving their challenge ...

Helsinki Chemicals Forum Highlights
ECHA and REACH Regulation Challenges
Launching
a new standard is never easy. Despite an agency’s best efforts,
phrases will be ambiguous and easily misinterpreted, deadlines will be
difficult to meet, unforeseen obstacles will occur. This has been the
case with one of the latest European Commission (EC) chemical safety regulations
known as Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals
(REACH).
This article discusses the conference and the latest REACH challenges...

Strategies for Success in
Today's Environment
A Closer Look: Thermo Fisher Scientific
& Symyx Partnership
The
economy has always had an impact on the way companies work. When times
are good, more products are sold, and more money is spent on equipment
and systems to expand the lab’s functionality and its ability to
handle an increased workload. 1999, for instance, was a strong year for
just about every organization because the economy was at a high. A decade
later, 2009 is an example of the other side of the coin. But life goes
on, so how are companies coping with the current difficult economic situation?
Find out how Thermo Fisher Scientific and SymyxTechnologies addressed
the challenge.

A Look Back at 2008

This past year will no doubt go down as one of the
most turbulent in history. It was a turning point in so many ways for
so many people, driven by economic crises that have touched just about
everyone in some way. Fortunately for the analytical sciences industry,
the impact was not as severe as it has been in other sectors...

Improving Research Efficiency with
ELNs

Advances in software have been helping
to optimize productivity and improve efficiency in research laboratories
for many years, but the pace seems to be increasing exponentially as research
tasks become more complex.
Those areas where tasks are still being performed manually have been disappearing
as new solutions make it easier and faster to do the work electronically.
Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs) are increasingly popular software tools
that are replacing the paper lab notebooks used on the front end of research
tasks. The number of ELN solutions has grown rapidly in recent years,
and the scope of those solutions has expanded so that there's probably
a solution out there for just about every configuration.

Travel & Learning:
Is Your Presence Required?
2009
is going to be a difficult year for conferences,
seminars, and short courses looking for attendees. In this time of restricted
budgets, spending money to attend an off-site event has many people wondering
if it's worth the expense and whether they can't get the information they
need some other way, such as on the Internet.
Unfortunately, the Internet rarely offers the depth of detail necessary
to extend one's knowledge in the way that a short course or seminar provides.
And certainly there's nothing quite like the highly subjective encounters
that an exhibit hall offers to look and touch and test drive various instruments
and software as well as meet the people who will support those solutions.
A picture of a Mass Spectrometer may be worth a thousand words, but actually
looking at the instruments, being able to compare various makes and models
at the same time, and talking to their representatives in a neutral environment
is priceless. The difficulty lies in the number of venues available and
selecting the most worthwhile events that can be justified and budgeted.

Working
Smarter by Automating Processes
Thanks to the housing crisis and the swings
in the stock market, the economy is certainly on everyone's mind, not
only how it pertains to us as individuals but also how it affects the
companies we work for and our particular niche industries within the larger
analytical chemistry marketplace.
While the situation is bad, it is not dire. Industry experts are emphatic
that this is not another Great Depression despite the recent calamitous
events. "For the average person, it hasn't had an impact," states
Gregg Easterbrook, a Brookings Institution fellow in government and economic
studies. "Goods and services are plentiful; the price of gas is falling;
ATMs are working. People are not losing jobs left and right." Easterbrook
points out that the current situation is a financial panic, not an economic
collapse (1).

New Book Examines International
IT Regulations and Compliance
Every now and then the subject comes up about books and what’s available
for those who want a bit more of an in-depth look at things than the information
offered on the vast but shallow seas of the Internet. There haven’t
been many books on LIMS published recently, mainly because the LIMS marketplace
has matured and has become a subset of the larger Informatics marketplace
as that arena has also matured. This means that looking for publications
which examine LIMS issues in-depth has become a bit like looking for the
proverbial needle in a haystack. Well, here’s one of those golden
needles for your consideration.

Roundup: Moving Forward, but Slowly
The
FDA has been busy the first half of 2008, getting budgets approved, moving
forward with various rules and regulations, and releasing new draft guidances

marketplace, little of it is a surprise. Following is a roundup of some
of the more significant events

The Future of Lab Data Management
Predicting the future is a lot like predicting the weather: it’s
perfectly norma l
to be wrong 50 per cent of the time, mainly because anything can affect
and therefore change the prediction at the last moment. Getting it right
half the time is not just a science, but an art. The science/art of accurate
prediction relies heavily on past trends as well as nimble assessment
of how those trends drove changes in their own time and what those changes
might be in the future.

The LIMS Marketplace
In the Beginning...
The first LIMS were developed in the pharmaceutical and related industries
for use as a QA/QC tool in the early 1980's by in-house development departments
or under contract by external software houses. These LIMS were exclusively
based on mini-computer or mainframe technology, often using proprietary
database software as their foundation.
